Aklika, (W/R), Feb. 21, GNA-Natives of Aklika, a farming community in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality, have appealed to the Government, the local Municipal Assembly and philanthropists for a motorised canoe to convey their children across the Bonsa river to school.
According to the deprived residents of Aklika, the community has no secured form of transport on the river so school children depend on good Samaritans to cross the raging river and such help may take several hours to come.
They said children are not encouraged to go school for fear of drowning and that farm produce also rot on their farms because ferrying them across the swift river is impossible.
According to residents, the use of two canoes including life jackets procured by the community even pose danger to users during the raining season.
When the Ghana News Agency paid a visit to the only public school in the area, it was apparent that the mud building which housed the school was deteriorating fast as it could no longer stand the assault of the heavy rains.
In an interview with Mr. Richard Boyuo, head teacher of the school, he explained that when the river overflows its banks in the raining season, authorities have no alternative than to close down the school for at least one month.
He said this is affecting the performance of the entire school especially, final year students who have to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination as it has become a routine.
Mr. Boyuo reiterated that throughout his six years stay in the school, the facility had not received any support from the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Education Directorate.
The head teacher said he has communicated the plight of the school to the Municipal Education Directorate on several occasions but has had no response.
Mr. Boyuo has therefore appealed to the Government and the MCE to construct a modern school building with ancillaries and also provide incentive packages for his staff to continue sacrificing to improve on the level of education in the area.
Mr. Isaac Newton, a native of Aklika, said though the citizenry are trying to develop the community, the Municipal Assembly does not seem to care.
He said the community cannot boost of a source of good drinking water, health centre among others adding, life in Aklika is becoming unbearable.
