31 December Women's Movement condemns attack on Ursula

Accra, April 13, GNA - The 31st December Women's Movement has called on Government to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack on some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are arrested and prosecuted.

“We have learnt with utmost disbelief the barbarous act meted out to a female political office aspirant and her colleague, a provocation that should have been discouraged and avoided”, she said.

A statement issued by the Movement on Friday and signed by Madam Sylvia Ahorlu, General Secretary and copied to the Ghana news Agency in Accra said.

Madam Ursula Owusu, NPP Parliamentary Aspirant for Ablekuma South Constituency and some members of the party, were on Thursday manhandled and brutalized on their visit to the Odododiodio Constituency in Accra.

The statement said the act of violence meted out to Madam Owusu and her colleagues was an affront to women and against the Constitutional rights of all Ghanaians, hence the need for human rights agencies to ensure that justice prevails.

She said the Movement had over the years worked tirelessly to empower women at all levels, to ensure that women were included in decision- making processes hence the need for them to protect that effort.

“If the 8.3 per cent of women we have in politics are being harassed, attacked and discouraged, then our efforts has been rendered fruitless”, it added.

The statement reiterated that attacks against women, would not deter the Movement from empowering women, but rather strengthen them for higher laurels.
