Agogo (Ash), Sept 12, GNA - Some chiefs in the newly created Asante-Akim North District have publicly backed the creation of the new 45 constituencies and appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to go ahead.
According to them, this would bring development to the doorsteps of the people and help the Members of Parliament (MPs) to become more efficient with smaller constituents to serve.
They said this in a statement read at a press conference at Agogo on Tuesday.
Nana Badu Kaakyire, Nifahene, Nana Kwame Boamah, Akwamuhene, both of the Agogo Traditional Area and Nana Asante Frimpong, Krontihene of Domeabra, jointly signed the statement.
“We are urging the EC to, by its constitutional mandate, go ahead with the creation of the new constituencies so as to hasten development in the newly created districts”, they said.
They expressed anxiety that any attempt to truncate the establishment of the proposed constituencies could undermine the pace of progress of the affected areas.
The chiefs therefore urged the EC to stick to its decision and refuse to give in to pressure.
Asante-Akim North is one of the new constituencies the Commission has planned to create.
They appealed to parliament to do everything to ensure that the Constitutional Instrument (CI) establishing the constituencies is passed.
