Bolton defender Gary Cahill says club have been on a 'rollercoaster' but backs manager Owen Coyle

Quality and commitment were evident in Bolton Wanderers 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic and none more so than in Chris Eagles, whose performance was described as “complete” by his manager.

Coyle signed the midfield player from Manchester United and then Burnley and added: “At United, Chris had a tremendous grounding, but I told him to take a step back to take two forward and I think he’s done that.

“He had the one season in the Premier League with Burnley and now he has to show he’s the real deal and a bonafide Premier League player. I believe he is and when you see performances like that we want to make sure he’s consistent with it.”

Roberto Martinez, the Wigan manager, does not expect a “straightforward season” as a fifth consecutive league defeat — despite a fine strike from Mohamed Diame and penalty save from Ali Al Habsi to deny Kevin Davies — left them in the bottom two.

“The talent is there, the attitude is there and in many ways our play was very good. But it is simple for us, we cannot concede goals like that,” he said. “We are not in a situation where we can outscore the opposition.”
