8 year-old Armando Bigo a second grader at PS 170 in the Bronx went to the Papa Yala’s Deli in the Randall Avenue bodega wit his mother 31 year-old Ely Flores at about 8:15 ;.m when a men riding a bicycle fired a gun to the store front, the bullet struck young Armando in the shoulder, the strange thing was that he didn’t scream or cry, he just put his hand on his left shoulder and walked to his mother.
When Ely saw her son’s shoulder she began to scream, cry but Armando didn’t understand why his mother was crying hysterically.
“All of a sudden, we heard a shot, I called out for my son…I was screaming hysterically.”
“He walked up to me holding his left shoulder and that’s when we noticed he’d been shot,” Ely Flores said. I was screaming hysterically, and he said, ‘Mami, calm down, why are you crying, Mami? I said, ‘Baby, because you got shot.”
Mahmood Abdulrub the store manager heard Elly screams and went to see what had happened, he was surprise by the brave boy who even in the situation he was going thru at the moment, never forgot his manners.
“I heard screaming,” Abdulrub said. “The mom cried for her son. I see this cute little boy walking over slowly holding his left shoulder. He looked stunned,” he said. “There was blood everywhere. That’s a tough little kid. He never screamed or cried – he was a very brave boy.”
”The only time he said ‘Ouch’ was when I applied pressure,” Abdulrub said. “Then he said, ‘Thank you, mister. He kept telling me he had to spit up blood,” Abdulrub said. “He was worried about spitting blood on my floor. I kept telling him not to worry about it.”
Armando Bigo was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where he was treated for a punctured, blood-filled lung, a fractured rib and an injured spinal cord.
