Over the past decade, there have been a lot of developments on the political scene on the Right, Left, Far Right and the Far Left and other ideological leanings. These developments require new dimensions and paradigm to political party management. Ghanaian political parties are not immune to these changes. We need to embrace these new models or we either stagnate or go backwards.
In Ghana, the past couple of months have seen significant developments on the political scene. The leading parties fought a close election as expected with the NDC being, controversially, declared winner by the Electoral Commission. The NPP is commendably contesting this declaration in the Supreme Court and hopefully justice will be delivered there.
However, a careful appraisal of the political process and its leadership especially during this campaign and election period reveals the need for a deeper and more critical input into our political system. It is these needs that UNITE seek to meet for the conservative, liberal democratic platform.
In achieving this, it is important to embrace professional management and research based decision-making which are required in managing an energetic institution like a political party. Furthermore, the current trends in political environment require competent and progressive leadership, accountability, transparency and high level of ethics among others to be successful.
The UNITE Conservative Institute, believes that, in order to keep the party relevant for the present and the foreseeable future, we must continuously engage in a process of self examination within the party. This is especially relevant to the youth; who have ever evolving ambitions and aspirations which the party at all times must strive to match and fulfill.
In order to achieve these aims we call on the party, among others, to show a renewed and greater interest in research. By research, we mean an interest in the acquisition of knowledge in best practices in political party management. We are of the opinion that, an appreciation of professional research knowledge would put the party in a good position to understand the rapidly evolving political scene in Ghana with respect to age, ethnicity, demographics and all voting blocs.
Similarly, we call on the Party to, as a matter of priority, to identify and promote able young men and women. This is crucial because an increasing percentage of our voting population is youthful in age. The Party's ideals, orientation and purpose should be singularly directed towards the attraction of this important voting bloc.
All members of the Party must feel involved in the running of the party. In order for this to be done, there must be a greater a desire for transparency, and diversity of thought and personnel.
The leadership must engage with membership at all levels and consult them regularly in decision making. We also call on members to show respect to the leadership and direct their grievances through the appropriate channels.
It is in this vein that UNITE calls on the general membership of the NPP to lend its leadership an unflinching support in the pursuit of electoral justice at the Supreme Court. It is an acceptable part of the electoral process and a milestone in our development as a political Party.
In conclusion, we acknowledge that, the road to achieving these objectives is challenging but it is something worth pursuing for the good of The Party and Mother Ghana.
