PRESS RELEASE BY THE VOLTA REGION STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION OF GHANA- KNUST CHAPTER ON THE THEME“ ENSURING TRIBAL AND VIOLENT-FREE GHANA BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER 2012 GENERAL ELECTION - THE ROLE OF ALL STAKEHOLDERS.
Good day fellow Ghanaians, the arrival of the year has provided all of us with cause of reflection on the past years. For it must be underscored that some social, political, economic and cultural happenings in the past years and recent days left an ineffaceable mark in the memory of Ghanaians, some of which certainly must be eschewed so as not to see the social fabric holding this country together tearing apart.
As students and intellectuals, weconsider ita sacred responsibility to always be up and doing and alert our authorities and leaders who seem to be getting off track of their responsibilities, forwe would also not be spared by the consequences of their actions and inactions in case something untoward should emanate from them.
Ladies and Gentlemen, VORSAG-KNUST is of the view that, for Ghana to continue towing the path of peace ,tranquility and to be able to sustain the economic and developmental gains that has been chalked by successive governments' so far certain occurrences such as tribal politics, making of tribal comments, politics of insults, making of irresponsible political statements thereby causing unnecessary fear and panic, attack on groups and individuals purported to be affiliated to one political party or tribe, making of military-like statements, preaching of violent words and beating of war drums, resulting to physical attack on people with alternative views , criminalizing every action of opponents just to score cheap political points, allegations against opponents without proof , name calling of political opponents, attack on the media be it print or electronic , venal, cynical and oppressive response to actions must seize if we as a country want to preserve the peace and tranquility that God has blessed us with.
But rather let our politicians and men of authority preach words of unity and peaceful coexistence among Ghanaians no matter the race, creed, colour or tribe. Politicians must not demoralize and demonizeothers just because they are from other tribes or in different political parties or better still hold varied views to theirs.
The deadly canker of tribalism must not be allowed to eat into the social fabric of ourbeloved society for Ghana cannot afford to go the way other African countries have gone and are going. We would like to appeal to Ghanaians as a whole to reject any political party or political tradition that would like to tow the tribal line in this very electionyear. The Gas deserve to be respected and treated equally just as the Ashantis, the Ewes just as the Gonjas, the Fantes just like the Dagombas, the Akyems just like the Frafras and it goes beyond mention. Tribal and regional particularism must be strongly condemned by all loving Ghanaians. It must be noted that, it has taken years and resources to build Ghana to where it is now but it can take just seconds to destroy the gains the country has chalked so far.
Rather than engaging in vicious acts that can send this country into a perpetual chasm, politicians must simply put forward how they believe their actions in power or even in opposition can bring income and food on the table of the average Ghanaian.
Let us divide to unite and not forget that there are as much differences of opinions and as much differences of discussions about what is just as about what is useful to society but at the end of the day Ghana must come first. Politicians must make attainable promises so as to make the social contract devoid of breach.
T o our fellow youths and students who would be used by politicians, we want to advise them to uphold first the peaceful cohesion in Ghana and assume to put their feet in the shoes of fellow youths in countries like Tunisia, Libya, Cote D'ivoire, Egypt and know how to absorb the reckless militant statements of nation-wrecking politicians.
The VORSAG- KNUST would like to remind Ghanaians once again to dispute the pretention of any political message which sets up a standard of justice not grounded on fairness, truth, accountability, equal opportunity and treatment, leverage and tribal-free comments. Let us bring back virtues: simplicity, patriotism, and integrity, a love of justice and of liberty which are far and far decaying as a result of the reckless actions of our men of honor who do all kind of things in the name of politics.
The Electoral Commission must be given free hand to perform her works without undue pressure from any political party.
The Media must not allow themselves to be used by politicians for their selfish gains.
Last but not least, VORSAG- KNUST would like to appeal to the Clergy, the BAR association, IEA, the Peace Council, the National Chief Imam, CODEO, National Media Commission as well as all non-political, non-tribal, religious and civil organizations in the country to call politicians no matter their rank to order whenever they want to exceed their limit and never compromise on their integrity in any way or circumstances.
Let us all endeavor to preserve the peace we are enjoying. Posterity will not forgive those whose actions and inactions would plunk this country into chaos.
Thanks.
LONGLIVE GHANA AND LONG LIVE ALL PEACE LOVERS OF GHANA
